Nursery/Preschool

The SBK Nursery/Preschool is the program for preschool children, birth through pre-kindergarten at South Bay Church. We want children to walk away from our preschool program knowing three things:

God made me, God loves me, and Jesus wants to be my friend forever. This is accomplished by creating a comfortable place where children have a consistent leader and experience a caring God.

How many volunteers do you have? What do your volunteers do? What is their commitment level?

It takes 19-23 volunteers to make SBK nursery/preschool happen each Sunday. Our Greeter/Security welcomes first time guests and keeps our entry and exit points secure.  Our check in team checks every child and volunteer in.  Small Group Leaders oversee classroom activities and are responsible for connecting with a group of 4-6 children through weekly contact. Student Leaders serve alongside Small Group Leaders.  We encourage our volunteers to serve every other week while there is only 1 service and every week when there are 2 services to maintain the highest level of consistency for our children.  However, we know that not everyone is able to start out with that level of commitment. Therefore, we offer substitute (fill-in) positions when volunteers cannot serve every week.

How are Your Volunteers Screened?

Every volunteer must complete The South Bay Kids Volunteer Application. References are asked for and the applicant must sign a consent form for a criminal background check. We pay to have the security and background check completed by an independent company. We complete background checks on all volunteers who work in SBK.

What is Your Security Policy?

When parents drop off their children, they must stop by a check-in station before entering the classroom. They are given a numbered security tag to wear. Their child gets the corresponding numbered tag to wear and an asset tag for their diaper bag. The parent must wear the security tag when entering the SBK area. The tag must be presented to the Small Group Leader at the end of the hour in order to pick up their child. We also use the security tag number to page parents from the service if their child needs them during the hour. Each time you check your child in, they are given a different random security number.

Which curriculum do you use?

Once children turn 2, we use First Look, a curriculum written by The reThink Group. To find out more information about First Look, go to www.myfirstlook.org.
